Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Programme Manager of the Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS) Unit – Air Quality, the International Specialist UN Volunteer will:

  • Assistance is provided for planning, development and implementation of Air Quality monitoring projects for the GEMS Air pogramme;
  • Support selected countries to strengthen their capacities of air quality monitoring by supporting design and operation of air pollution monitoring networks including periodic analysis reports of data collecting, organizing regular meetings to discuss issues of concern and solutions.
  • Contribute to providing access to data and information disseminated through data platform;
  • Assist with follow up and coordination with Member States interested in affordable air quality monitoring pilot initiative;
  • Assist with drafting briefing notes, concept notes, background papers etc;
  • Support the implementation of the GEMS Air Consortium for Better Air Quality, including management of EOIs, follow up on the formulation of a Steering Committee and Technical Advisory Committee, developing of inventory of on-going and past projects from the consortium, registration and so forth.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Master’s degree in Applied Meteorology or Atmospheric Science with experience with remote sensing and use of GIS and modeling applications.

Required experience: 24 Months Experience remark:
  • Working experience with an international UN organization like UNEP and the WMO on air quality monitoring or meteorically parameters would be an asset. At least 2 years work experience including familiarity with air quality sensor systems including analysis abd reporting of data acquisition producing user manuals for day-to-day technical operations.
  • Familiarity with UN Environment work in the area of experiences and knowledge on air quality monitoring and assessment is an asset;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in issues of socio environmental concern, sustainable development, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System
