ASSOCIATE GENERAL COUNSEL

Key Responsibilities

Specifically, the AGC will serve as principal legal counsel to the People & Culture (“P&C”) department on human resource matters, including compliance with employment laws such as FMLA, FLSA and other applicable federal and state laws, personnel policies and procedures, employee mobility solutions, expat and third country national issues, domestic and international tax, affirmative action, hiring practices, payroll practices, employee performance issues, termination and severance, internal investigations, and other issues as required (expected level of effort ~40%, with time roughly being split between employment matters domestically and abroad). Experience in international compensation and benefits management desired.

The ACG also will work closely with CARE staff in the United States and across the globe advising executive, regional and country management on legal and business aspects related to CARE’s operations and various sensitive matters of legal or compliance significance. This generalist role will require the ability to learn new areas of the law quickly and to apply those learnings in complex settings. Specific duties will include such areas as: general corporate advice, support to CARE’s non-profit work and that of its subsidiaries in the for-profit social enterprise space, regulatory compliance including federal grants and contracts, general litigation, investigations, lobbying and advocacy, tax exempt matters, contract drafting and negotiations, intellectual property law and immigration matters, as well as advising senior management on governance and corporate compliance matters. Specific responsibilities may be added or changed over time.

Professional Experience and Qualifications

The AGC will work closely with a small, closely-knit legal team, and must be a team player able to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, be self-motivated and able to prioritize and work under pressure, be detail-oriented with excellent follow-through, and be able to actively manage outside counsel. He or she will have demonstrated the ability to work closely with stakeholders both internal and external to CARE and will possess superb verbal and written communication and negotiation skills, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to think strategically and possess excellent business judgment. He or she must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and complex issues as they arise and must possess a results-oriented attitude that seeks to achieve the aims of the organization while managing legal exposure. Some travel, including international, will be required, and he or she must be comfortable with and have sensitivity to working with a variety of individuals in cross-cultural situations. Clear dedication to and interest in the mission of CARE is essential.

A Juris Doctor degree is required from an accredited law school with current qualification to practice law. A minimum of eight to ten years in-house, firm or government legal experience handling employment-law matters, and other legal areas is required, with four or more years of in-house, non-profit legal department experience preferred. A litigation background and Spanish or French language proficiency desired. Ideally this position will be based in the Atlanta offices of CARE but may be negotiable subject to CARE’s discretion.
