Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City.The Education & Learning department provides year round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope of Work:

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, digital literacy, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.

As part of the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, the Digital Literacy Teacher will plan and teach a Digital Literacy curriculum across all grade levels to teach critical skills, prioritizing but not limited to keyboarding, proficiency in Microsoft Word and G Suite applications, how to identify credible sources, digital citizenship and online safety. The Digital Literacy Teacher will instruct a total of 12, half-hour lessons each week: two lessons per week, per student group (three Lower School groups and three Upper School groups.) The lessons are taught from 12:30pm - 2:00pm, Monday to Thursday.From 12:00pm-12:30pm and 2:00pm-4:00pm, Monday to Thursday, the Digital Literacy Teacher will lesson planning, attend staff meetings, and complete additional tasks as assigned.

Digital Literacy is integral to students’ equitable access to 21st Century learning. Following pre-program training, the Digital Literacy Teacher will be expected to understand how her/his contributions fit into the larger NYSA model for supporting students at the Academy and liaise with other professionals accordingly, especially the classroom teaching staff and Dean of Instruction.

 

Position term: June 29 – August 13, 2021

Hours:

• Training: June 29, 30 & July 1: Up to 24 hours of training, 9:00AM – 5:00PM

O Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates

• Main Program: July 6 – August 13: Monday – Thursday, 4 hours per day

 

 

Major Responsibilities:

• Participate in the Teachers Meet & Greet (tentatively scheduled for June 17, 2021), all planning sessions as assigned with the Dean of Instruction, pre-program All Staff training, and all program meetings and staff development activities, thereafter

• Drawing from reputable digital literacy standards and materials, plan a 6-week culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum

• Plan for sheltered instructional (SIOP) approaches to support English Language Learners/multilingual learners, K-12 in the curriculum

• On a weekly basis, submit daily lesson plans, slide decks, and associated materials

• Perform formal pre-, formative, and post-assessments to inform planning and instruction. Record student observations on IRC-defined indicators of school readiness. Complete the all staff program evaluation

• Regularly review student progress and maintain student data bodies of evidence

• Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all IRC policies and protocols

• Rigorously plan for, incorporate, and manage Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and volunteer Peer Mentors into Digital Literacy classroom instruction

• Participate in one after-school parent/teacher conference evening as assigned

• Complete progress reports and final report cards for each student
