The Health Manager is responsible for supporting the Chief in managing the health section and leading the management, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of the health programme; specifically, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) and the immunization programme within the country programme.

How can you make a difference? 

The Health Manager reports to the Chief of Health/Nutrition/CSD for general guidance and supervision. S/He is responsible for supporting the Chief in managing the health section and leading the management, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of the health programme; specifically, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) and the immunization programme within the country programme. S/He provides technical guidance and operational support throughout the programming process to facilitate the achievement of concrete and sustainable results, according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM), organizational Strategic Plans and goals, standards of performance, and accountability framework. 

Summary of key functions/accountabilities: 

  1. MNCH Programme development, planning, management and implementation monitoring
  2. Provide technical support to National, Provincial and district Departments of Health on MNCH programme implementation.
  3. Advocacy, networking and partnership building with government, UN organizations, civil society and Non-government organizations working in MNCH programme implementation
  4. Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building of government, civil society and Non-government organizations working in MNCH programme implementation
  5. In conjunction with National, Provincial and district Departments of Health; Improve execution of health operational plans among target district health management teams in project districts, including support for capacity building, mentoring and monitoring of the implementation of the plans
  6. Support improvement and disaggregation of data for children at different levels across the child health continuum (national, province, district, facility) to facilitate use of data for planning, monitoring and course correction among target district health management teams in South Africa
  7. Improve government understanding of the Evidence Based Planning/ Bottleneck Analysis (EBP/BNA) methodology and increased insights on how the EBP/BNA methodology could assist the National Department to support planning and health systems strengthening for the National Health Insurance
  8. Support the alignment with ongoing initiatives across the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health continuum of care.

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: public health/nutrition, pediatric health, family health, health research, global/international health, health policy and/or management, environmental health sciences, biostatistics, socio-medical, health education, epidemiology or another relevant technical field.

*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree

  • Training in fundraising, brand management and/or direct marketing required. NGO Management an asset. Knowledge of Children’s Rights and Business is an asset.
  • A minimum of eight years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: public health/nutrition planning and management, maternal and neonatal health care, or health emergency/humanitarian preparedness.
  • Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.  Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
