Background Information - Small Grants Cluster

Grant Management Services (GMS): GMS – previously named the Small Grants Programme (SGP) – is a one-stop shop for managing environmental programmes and projects through grants. Currently, the GMS operations is spread in around 120 countries. The GMS chief niche is to serve global programmes with its main partner UNDP-GEF, and other bilateral member states and donors. GMS has proven experience in grant management and considered as the gold standard for managing grants in UNOPS. It has pushed the boundaries of grantmaking through innovation and upscaling.

UNOPS supports partners to build a better future by providing services that increase the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of peace building, humanitarian and development projects.  Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organizations.

The New York Service Cluster (NYSC) supports the United Nations Secretariat, as well as other New York-based United Nations organizations, bilateral and multilateral partners in the delivery of UNOPS mandate in project management, infrastructure management, and procurement management. The Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) supports diverse partners with their peacebuilding, humanitarian and development operations. It was formed by combining the following portfolios: Grants Management Services (GMS), UN Technology Support Services (UNTSS), Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) It provides Services to partners' programmes that are designed, structured, and managed with a global perspective and primarily serving partners that are headquartered in New York.  SDC has a footprint of approximately 125 countries.

The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) supports activities of non-governmental and community-based organizations in developing countries to address environmental priorities while generating sustainable livelihoods. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as a corporate programme, SGP is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of the GEF partnership, and is executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

This is a position to support a project which UNOPS is implementing for the United Nations Development Programme. The incumbent of this position will be personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

Functional Responsibilities

The intern will provide general assistance to the Central Program Management Team (CPMT) of the SGP. 

Under the supervision of the Programme Management Associate, the intern will:

  • Provide general support to CPMT colleagues
  • Review and update the SGP database, Intranet, email groups and other records
  • Support comprehensive quality checks on reported data by country colleagues. This will require coordination with country colleagues and an eye towards details
  • Assist with the periodic preparation of SGP workshops, retreats, and related events and tasks, in particular as regards to their administrative and logistical aspects
  • Provide other research and implementation assistances related to scope of the internship

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:
  • Graduate from Masters/Graduate Program or Bachelors/Undergraduate Program within three (3) years prior to the application date of the internship, or currently enrolled in them. Degree preference for economics, statistics, environment, natural resources management, international development or related field.
Experience:
  • Experience in programme management support
  • Experience in data management and/or analytical skills, with experience and interest in both quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Strong excel skills are a requirement
Language:
  • Excellent writing skills in English and strong editorial skills, basic knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an asset.
