This role will focus on setting up, maintaining, and developing a solid talent pipeline and infrastructure to attract new candidates into the animal advocacy movement, especially for roles in the most effective nonprofits.

ABOUT ANIMAL ADVOCACY CAREERS

Animal Advocacy Careers (AAC) is an organisation that seeks to address the career and talent bottlenecks in the animal advocacy movement, especially the farmed animal movement. There are many billions of animals kept in appalling conditions; we provide careers services for individuals and organisations seeking to help them.

In 2021, we are planning to offer animal advocacy organisations support with recruitment for their most difficult to hire roles, and training for staff with management responsibilities. We may offer additional services as the year progresses.

BENEFITS TO YOU

  • An opportunity to contribute to the early development of an exciting new nonprofit startup that works to help animals as effectively as possible.

  • Fully remote work environment and team (including after COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out).

  • Flexible working hours.

  • Generous and flexible self-managed time off policy.

  • Encouragement and support to spend at least 5% of paid time on training and development.

  • Reimbursement for reasonable expenditure on training or equipment costs.

  • Opportunities for progression.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

AAC is a relatively new nonprofit with only three current team members, though we have funding to grow the team, generously provided by Open PhilanthropyAnimal Charity EvaluatorsEffective Altruism Funds, and various individual supporters. This role has the exciting opportunity to develop and nurture the future talent pipeline for the effective animal advocacy movement and work with multiple organisations doing amazing work to reduce animal suffering.

Tasks will include:

  • Developing and improving the animal advocacy movement’s talent pipeline for impactful roles, most likely in nonprofits.

  • Working with AAC’s co-founders to develop and implement a strategy to attract and nurture future talent, especially for the movement’s most difficult-to-hire roles.

  • Working with AAC’s co-founders to optimise AAC’s other services (e.g. job board, online course) for feeding into recruiting and the talent pipeline.

  • Headhunting for a number of high impact roles, including among passive candidates, e.g. via  social media, jobs boards, career fairs, and cold calls.

  • Working with organisations to understand their specific requirements and priorities to ensure the best suited candidates are matched.

  • Working with AAC’s operations manager to ensure that all recruiting activities are legally compliant, e.g. regarding data protection, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Further projects may include:

    • Working with organisations to refine their hiring approach;

    • Developing standard operating procedures for use by AAC and other animal advocacy nonprofits in their hiring and recruitment;

    • Developing strategies to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the movement’s hiring practices.

    • Expansion of AAC’s recruiting service to incorporate other potentially high impact role types, such as in animal product alternatives startups or government and policy.

AAC is a new and rapidly evolving organisation, so the scope of this role may change over time.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You will:

  • Have at least 3 years of recruiting experience.

  • Have had success in securing applications from both active and passive candidates.

  • Have prior experience of building and developing a strong talent pipeline.

  • Have awareness and experience of hiring best practices.

  • Be comfortable working independently in a fully remote team.

  • Have a problem-solving mindset.

  • Be motivated to do work that helps animals.

  • Be motivated to develop strategies and processes that optimise for social impact at the movement level.

Though not essential, it would be great if you had some or all of the following:

  • Prior experience recruiting for nonprofits

  • Familiarity with the animal advocacy and/or effective altruism communities.

  • Ability to build relationships and rapport with client organisations.

  • Expertise or familiarity with best practice on various human resources topics, such as hiring, retention, and employee policies.

Research indicates that men tend to apply for jobs when they meet just 60% of the criteria, while women and other marginalized groups mostly only apply if they are a 100% match. If you are passionate about AAC’s mission and think you have what it takes to be successful in this role even if you don’t check all the boxes, please apply. We’d appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.
