OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Global Tuberculosis Programme (GTB) leads and guides the global effort to end the TB epidemic through universal access to people-centred prevention and care, multisectoral action and innovation. Specifically GTB: 1) provides global leadership to end TB through strategy development,political and multisectoral engagement, strengthening review and accountability, advocacy, and partnerships, including with civil society; 2) shapes the TB research and innovation agenda and stimulates the generation,translation and dissemination of knowledge; 3) develops policy options, norms and standards for TB prevention and care and facilitates their implementation;4) provides specialized technical support for Member States and partners,working with WHO regional and country offices to catalyse change and build sustainable capacity; and 5) monitors, evaluates and reports on the status ofthe TB epidemic and progress in financing and implementation of the end TB Strategy at global, regional and country levels.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1) To support WHO efforts to accelerate the development and availability of new TB diagnostics, drugs and, in particular,vaccines. 2) To support and expand existing partnerships in TB research and innovation, and build new strategic initiatives and partnerships as relevant and appropriate. 3) To facilitate the adaptation and implementation of the End TB Strategy with colleagues within the technical teams of the GTB Department, and in liaison with regional and country office colleagues. 4) To support the development of the global TB report, in particular the chapters related to TB research and innovation, inliaison with colleagues in the Global Tuberculosis Programme. 5) To facilitate policy dialogue with Member States and other stakeholders, coordinate the development of strategic and policy documents and organization of high level events in liaison with colleagues within the technical teams of the GTB Department, and in liaison with regional and country office colleagues. 6) To monitor implementation of the Global Strategy for TB research and innovation, in liaison with colleagues within the technical teams of the GTB Department, and in liaison with regional and country office colleagues. 7) Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: An advanced level University degree (Master's or above) in Public Health or Epidemiology.
Desirable: A relevant PhD .

Experience

Essential: Prior research experience in global health,particularly on TB and/or infectious disease control. A minimum of 7 years' experience in working in a public health environment, including experience inlow- or middle-resource countries and at least 5 years at international level.
Desirable: Experience in working with Regions, Countries and global health partners in the development/implementation of TB related policies. Publishing experience in the area of TB research promotion,coordination and global strategies.

Skills

Strong technical skills in epidemiology and public health, as well as a good knowledge of health research. Solid understanding ofWHO and its mandate. Strong organizational and persuasive skills, ability to use participatory approaches in their contact with external parties and stakeholders, including in high level and formal meetings. S/He must have excellent verbal and written communications skills in English as well as extensive experience in preparing formal reports and background technical documents for high-level meetings of governments. Demonstration of knowledge and ability towork in a multi-disciplinary environment, coordinate multi-sectoral stakeholders and accomplish tasks with multiple objectives. Demonstrated ability to work constructively with people with different backgrounds and orientations.Respect for differences and ensures that all can contribute.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 74,913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5082 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
