Mission and objectives

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Asia and the Pacific works in a dynamic and complex environment with the aim to support countries in the region in achieving their own development goals. As prescribed in the UNDP Strategic Plan, we focus our work in the following areas: Democratic Governance Poverty Reduction Crisis Prevention and Recovery Environment and Sustainable Development In addition to these organizational focus areas, reflecting the regional developmental priorities, UNDP in Asia and the Pacific places significant emphasis on gender, climate change, and social protection and inclusive growth, in all aspects of the work we do. Our work in these three areas is considered to reinforce and complement the four organizational focus areas. The Effective Governance and Peacebuilding Team in UNDP Regional Hub in Bangkok (BRH) seeks volunteers to support the team’s work on Civil Society, Youth, Women and peacebuilding, and Innovation in 2015.

Context

The objective of the UNDP B+HR Asia project is to end business-related human rights abuses and ensure no one is left behind in the pursuit of prosperity. In the 7 countries we program in, we engage governments on policy-making to promote greater transparency and accountability. We encourage businesses to change their behaviour and advance environmental and human rights concerns. We empower civil society actors to realize social justice goals and ensure the voices of the most vulnerable are heard. In everything, we enrich the enabling environment for a business and human rights agenda to take hold, leading to greater gains in sustainable development in Asia. We need an Online Volunteer to demonstrate how data can be better leveraged to show project impact across the three areas of programmatic focus. We are collecting data on “users” of knowledge products, tools and events, but we do not know the full breadth of the possibilities for analysis.

Task description

UNDP seeks the assistance of an Online Volunteer to help create a data repository and generate, identify, clean, merge and analyze data sets to answer the groups of questions below. 1. What assets do we already have at our organization to take us on this data science journey? What in-house data sets do we have that can be merged to produce results? 2. Who is attending our events, downloading our knowledge products and using our tools? What are they doing with these outputs? How can we drive more people to our events, knowledge products and websites? Importantly, the Online Volunteer will work as part of a team to advise on how data can be used to programming direction and impact. The Online Volunteer will be asked to develop an agile project performance dashboard to answer key questions, and communicate results.
