Applications from women are encouraged.

Post
Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) in Advanced Manufacturing techniques for the production of EEE components for space application

This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations’ salary scale.

Location
ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands

Our team and mission

The application of advanced manufacturing (AM) techniques such as ink jet deposition, or roll-to-roll printing of large-area electronics functions is increasing dramatically. The rapid development of this technology shows promising results across a wide range of electronics applications.

The aim of this project is to investigate the potential use of AM techniques to identify potential game-changing applications that could be used in space for the fabrication of individual electrical, electronic and electromechanical (EEE) component functions through to complete subsystems. Examples of current AM applications for electronics include the fabrication of large-area roll-to-roll printed solar cells, additive layer 3D printing of electronic components in space, printing of conformal electronics on space craft structures e.g. to make novel sensors, phased array antennas, structurally embedded electronics, etc.

However, further work is required to (a) fully understand the industrial landscape and capabilities available in Europe (and overseas) for potential AM supply chains, (b) map out current and future state of art and emerging directions in this field, (c) identify the most promising potential space applications, (d) to assess if there are fundamental issues preventing advanced-manufactured EEE components/electronics functions being used in a space environment (radiation, vacuum, thermal environment, etc. ) through the testing of commercially available parts.
