Mission and objectives

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Context

In 2019, the UN Women started the implementation of the joint project with the MLSPP, with the participation of the National Commission for Women, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, titled “Assistance in Strengthening National Capacity, Coordinating and Creating Effective Interdepartmental Measures to Implement Family and Gender Policies, Expand Women’s Contribution to National Production and its Growth in order to Effectively Implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 5, 8 and 10 and Introduce Multisectoral Approach to Combat Domestic Violence in the Republic of Kazakhstan" (hereinafter - Umbrella Project). The project aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls in Kazakhstan, including the most marginalized, so that no one is left behind, through (1) the robust implementation of the gender and family policy in Kazakhstan, (2) economic integration of socially vulnerable women and creation of social protection policies and laws which provide decent work opportunities for vulnerable women, eliminate gender-based discrimination related to women's unpaid care work, and 3) full-fledged support in the integration of the multisectoral comprehensive governmental approach to the prevention of violence against women in Kazakhstan.
