Mission and objectives

UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. UNEP works on delivering transformational change for people and nature by drilling down on the root causes of the three planetary crises of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. UNEP employs seven interlinked subprogrammes for action: Climate Action, Chemicals and Pollutions Action, Nature Action, Science Policy, Environmental Governance, Finance and Economic Transformations and Digital Transformations.

Context

The United Nations Environment Programme is focusing on 3 thematic areas, climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. In order to achieve this, we have to support countries in 3 action areas (Climate Action, Nature Action and Chemical & Pollution Action.) UNEP does not have country presence and this therefore requires innovation in order to ascertain country priorities based on good evidence. Enabling pillars that allow us to do this revolve around the foundational programs (science-policy and Environmental Governance) and Enabling Programmes (Digital Transformations and Finance & Economic Transformations.) We therefore seek online UNVs as part of utilizing the digital space to gather important information in the countries. The information must be relevant to the environment and represent a major action/decision/policy. It can also be an important national, global or regional event held in the country indicating when, what, who and outcomes. Some of these may be related to economic development but with a positive or negative impact to the environment. They must be supported by credible data and sources of the information need to be verified. This assignment will provide an opportunity for youth in the continent to support UNEP work in the countries through their meaningful engagement and awareness of what their countries are doing and how UNEP can intervene in order to handle the triple planetary crisis of (climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution) This information should be gathered from relevant government ministries and departments. Further UNEP recognises the valuable contributions major groups play in promoting sustainable development through their well-established and diverse experience, expertise and capacity, especially in the area of analysis, sharing of information and knowledge, promotion of dialogue and support of implementation of sustainable development. In this case, it will be important that research also focuses on the 9 entities that UNEP identifies as major groups i.e Non governmental organizations, Farmers, Indigenous peoples and their communities, Local authorities, Women, The Scientific and Technological Community, Business and industry, Children and Youth, Workers and Trade Unions. NGOs have been important partners for UNEP since its foundation in 1972 and are currently involved in many UNEP activities, at policy and programmatic level, including implementation of projects through partnerships.
