Mission and objectives

The mandate of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) was established by the Security Council in its resolution 1244 (1999). The primary and overarching objectives of UNMIK are to ensure conditions for a peaceful and normal life for all inhabitants of Kosovo, strengthen and consolidate peace, security, and stability, and promote and protect human rights for all people.

Task description

Under the supervision of the Office of Rule of Law (OROL), Pristina, UNMIK main headquarters, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Gather information and report on policies and plans of Kosovo’s rule of law institutions with an impact on peace and confidence building in the territory. • Gather information and report on the rule of law activities of international partners, with a special focus on the activity of EU and EULEX in Kosovo. • Liaise and maintain relations with local and international actors represented in Kosovo for the provision of support in rule of law areas. • Conduct rule of law research and prepare opinions on issues of strategic importance relating to the rule of law sector in Kosovo in general, based on government’s policies, rule of law strategy’s objectives, domestic law, international law and relevant international human rights law. • Assist in the development, review, monitoring and reporting on programmatic activities’ plans. • Participate, take minutes, report on outcomes and follow up on action points of meetings on RoL matters. • Assist with strategic communications efforts related to the rule of law in Kosovo including updates in UNMIK’s webpage, storytelling, use of infographics, and collaboration with UNHQ/DPO/OROLSI’s counterparts on strategic communication and the rule of law. • Participate in the cross-cutting processing of international wanted notices. • Perform other duties as may be required in furtherance of the work of the OROL and the implementation of the Mission’s mandate.
