Mission and objectives

Around the world, we are witnessing increasing planet vulnerability, growing strain on economic, climatic, political and social systems and unprecedented deterioration in air, water and land quality. All of us, especially the most vulnerable, need new opportunities and skills to build a sustainable future together. SERES, a Guatemalan-based NGO, empowers vulnerable communities to address these critical issues starting with the least likely source: the youth. Almost 50% of the Guatemalan population is 18 years or under and the public school system does very little in the way of providing education and support to encourage critical thinking, innovation and leadership. SERES turns this paradigm upside down through a participatory youth leadership and empowerment training and social/environmental action program. SERES fosters transformative leadership, encourages collaboration and empowers young students to actively participate in the protection of their valuable ecosystems. Instead of the traditional school building initiatives or student scholarship programs, SERES provides students with a dynamic, educational opportunity that sparks continued learning, leadership, and community engagement. SERES’ programs equip students with the knowledge and information needed to ask critical questions of themselves, their communities, and the world at large. Program participants are informed about climate change and the global challenges we face, innovating creative ways to address these challenges, engaged in inspired action and connected to other change-makers locally, nationally, regionally and internationally. SERES enables today’s youth to lead the way to a sustainable future.
