WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The NC chapter of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), has undertaken a preserve history project whose goal is to tell a more complete story of several of our preserves, including the Green Swamp in Brunswick County, which lies in Waccamaw Siouan historical tribal lands. Currently, our preserve histories began either with when Europeans arrived or when TNC protected the preserve. We recognize that people have lived in this region for millennia. It is important their story be included in that history. As part of that project we want to include oral histories from the Waccamaw Siouan tribe – some of whom are aging. It is important that their stories be preserved now. The end goal of the project will include signs at the preserve and a web site that include these oral histories.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

The Waccamaw Siouan Oral History Intern will conduct a series of interviews with Waccamaw Siouan elders and tribal leaders to explore their connections to historical tribal lands in Southeastern North Carolina including lands that are now part of the Green Swamp Preserve.  Deliverables will include the record interviews, transcripts and a report that reflects both the project and the intern’s experience as well as a presentation to staff and others.

The position is a 35 hour/week, 8-week internship between May and August 2023.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma
  • Experience with conducting oral histories
  • Membership in the Waccamaw Siouan tribe.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrollment in UNC-Pembroke, because of its close connection to North Carolina’s Native community.
