Mission and objectives

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.

Context

As the demand for UN Volunteers continues to evolve, UNV is actively adapting to meet the diverse requests from our UN partners. it is vital for us to have a comprehensive understanding of the talent sources available in donor countries, particularly in the context of online volunteering. This knowledge will enable us to successfully achieve our target of securing fully funded assignments and contribute to SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, as outlined in the UN's 2030 Agenda. In this instance, the required task of developing factsheets of specific aspects of the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee will support the work of the Petitions and Urgent Actions Section at OHCHR headquarters in systematizing and streamlining the work of the Committee.

Task description

We are looking for 5 of Online Volunteers who have experience in legal research with excellent legal writing skills. The task will include the following responsibilities: - Discuss and determine parameters for the research - Identify and gather sources - Conduct research on the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee - Draft a 3-6-page factsheet on the agreed topic covering the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with the members of the Human Rights Committee and the Petitions and Urgent Actions Section, in the Human Rights Treaties Branch (HRTB) of the Treaty Mechanisms Division (HRCTMD) of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva and learn about the ways in which research on factsheet can support the work of members, the Secretariat, and possibly the general public.
