Mission and objectives

The United Nations International Computing Centre (ICC) has nearly 50 years of experience providing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services to United Nations programmes, funds and entities. Its mission is to provide ICT services to the United Nations family, maximise the sharing of infrastructure, systems and skills and generate economies of scale to benefit its over 60 Clients.

Context

UNICC is the core strategic partner for the United Nations system, providing agile, cost-effective, and UN-audit compliant high value digital business solutions. UNICC is looking for competent, experienced and highly motivated individuals prepared to evolve in a challenging and rewarding environment. Currently, the Data Center Support Unit (OPBS) is in need to expand its team with a hardware management expert, in order to maintain the components of the Data Center located in Valencia, Spain.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Senior Team Lead Data Center Support or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will: · Be responsible for managing and maintaining the Data Center cabling, racks, and standard configurations as well as DC equipment inside the Data Center ranging from server hardware (servers, blades, enclosure, modules appliance) networking equipment (switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers). · Maintain and manage associated monitoring and management tools; maintain firmware and driver update and fixing security issues. · Participate in the operational support of server hardware management, troubleshooting of incidents, handles request fulfilment, as well participate in the problem resolution, preventive maintenance related to Data Center and supported components. · Develop and maintain scripts to automate the process. · Maintain warranties and support renewal as well as technical escalation with vendors and providers · Be responsible for final testing and deployment of physical Data Center devices as well as all related technical documentation. · The incumbent will also participate in the out-of-hours duty roster and Stand-by services, as required. · Perform other duties, as required. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: · Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); · Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; · Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. · Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; · Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; · Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/expected outputs · As an active OPBS team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNICC and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Quality and efficient support provided for the completion of the activities as UN Volunteer Data Center Technician; o Tasks as assigned by the Team Leader and/or Head of the Unit conducted effectively and timely. · Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment · A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment Important Notes: • The nature of the work requires occasional work in tight and/or narrow spaces, such as under raised floors. • Frequent work in noisy areas with hotter and colder temperatures than standard office environmental conditions • Ability to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up and move up to 25Kg • Support the onsite data center and facilities including cabling of both data and power connections as well as maintain the Data Center ancillaries inside the rack (patching) • Perform physical installation and de-installation of equipment, management and maintenance of cabling plant both fiber and copper, racks, PDUs; perform standard maintenance tasks and work instructions as per documented procedures
