Overview of position

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, Head of Office, Project Manager & direct supervision of the National Migration Health Officer, the incumbent will support the mobile neonatal emergency health service delivery, expansion & deployment of all our clients Norway neonatal project in coordination with the Principal Medical Officer (PMO) of the General Hospital, Bama, Emergency Response Coordinator in the LGA & Head of Sub Office (HoSO) in Maiduguri, s / he shall coordinate specialized care for patients with neonatal critical illnesses. S / he shall provide leadership & guidance in establishing the highest standards of care & ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices.

Role objectives

S / he will undertake the below tasks:

Clinical:

  • Responsible for the overall operation of the neonatal room & provision of life saving healthcare services to neonatal patients in the facility.

  • Ensure the smooth running of all the services for all the units related to this project, but not limited to reception & counseling, triage, registration, out patient management, treatment, admission in patient management, nursing, referral, discharge, follow up, administrate, laboratory & data management.

  • Will work side by side with the PMO of the hospital to ensure an efficient and healthy working relationship for the benefit of the patients.

  • Responsible for supervising the facilitation of referrals from the IDP camps & host community via (Neo Tricycle) ambulance(s) to the pediatric neo room for proper management of neonates.

  • Responsible for the clinical care of critically ill neonates admitted to the neo room / SCBU according to generally accepted standards.

  • Conduct training for his / her team on basic & emergency neonatal care / management.

  • Supervise & maintain detailed reports on each child & document on their progress.

  • Manages critical & emergency cases, then refer complicated cases to other specialists the patient might be seeing.

  • With strict adherence to the rational drug use & prescribing practice, s / he will prescribe medications that are compatible with a particular patient & their other medication.

  • Advice patient’s parents / guardians on any alternative treatment they might be seeking.

  • Help the patient to fully recover from their illnesses & have the patient follow up even after they are okay as post recovery treatment is considered important.

  • Communicate & cooperate with other colleagues who wish to discuss other pertinent medical problems regarding neonates in other areas of the hospital.

  • S/he will be in charge specifically of the ventilatory, circulatory fluid & nutritional therapy concerning the neonates & pediatrics in the ICU.

  • Keep abreast of the latest medical information through continuous medical education, formal education & personal professional development.

  • Facilitate & make clinical & non clinical documentation & presentations of all admitted neonates & pediatric patients.

  • Ensure ethical conduct & professionalism in discharging his / her duties observing & staying up to date with the laws & statutory codes of medical practice.

  • Ensures that all cases in need of basic & emergency medical assistance are provided with adequate health services.

  • Will be accountable for professional & administrative supervision of the facility.

Administrative:

  • Participate in the design & formulation of unit policies, SOPs & clinical pathways.

  • Performing other applicable tasks & duties as assigned by the Pediatric Consultant, Chief Medical Officer / National Migration Health Officer.

  • Responsible for managing the facility with all the medical supplies.

  • Abide by the hospital rules, protocols & standard practices.

  • Perform any other tasks as assigned.

Project reporting

This role will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, Head of Office, Project Manager & direct supervision of the National Migration Health Officer.

Key competencies
  • Fellow medical doctor (consultant) or senior registrar in pediatrics with a pediatric sub specialty from an accredited academic institution or Nigeria Medical & Dental Council with at least two years of professional work experience or a fellowship in pediatrics (consultant) or a senior registrar (membership in pediatrics) practice in Nigeria & with a valid registration license. 

  • Has hands on experience in the management of various neonatal & pediatric critical care patients, including trauma intensive care, respiratory therapy, ICU / SCBU, nutrition, infectious disease & pulmonary hypertension ICU management.

  • Possess general medical knowledge & an understanding of how treatments affect different developmental growth stages.

  • Provide basic & advanced neonatal & pediatric life support (certification & abilities) & advanced mechanical ventilation & high frequency oscillatory ventilation management.

  • Should be updated on the latest breakthroughs in the field of neonatology & pediatrics.

  • Previous work experience with the UN, international organizations & companies would be an advantage preferably within the United Nations or the international humanitarian sector.

  • Training / experience in paediatrics is an advantage.

  • Good computer literacy & demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Power Point, Word & Share Point.

  • Attention to detail & accuracy in handling & reporting data.

  • Flexible work schedule & be ready to be engaged on short notice. 

  • Proven ability to establish & maintain strong working relations with relevant government counterparts, international organizations & private sector entities.

  • Is conversant with the norms, culture & religion of the people & can adapt easily, preferably some from that region. Given the stressful nature of Borno’s security situation, which remains fluid & unpredictable & its high interpersonal & communication skills demands, the doctor will need to be able to fit easily into a complex & highly operative team of various cultural backgrounds.

  • English language is required (oral & written).

  • Working knowledge of the local language like Hausa & Kanuri is an advantage.
