OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME


The mission of the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Programme (The Programme) is to enhance the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to emergencies and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations in managing health emergency risks. The Programme is dedicated to saving lives, alleviating suffering, and offering assistance in emergencies arising from all hazards that endanger the health and well-being of populations in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).

WHO employs an Incident Management System (IMS) to organize and oversee each emergency response. This system consists of an incident management team at the country level, which spearheads the response efforts, and an incident management support team at the headquarters and regional offices, providing support to country operations. The objective of this position is to assist the regional Incident Manager in coordinating the operation of the incident management support team established for WHO's response to the Sudan crisis.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the guidance of the regional incident manager, the intern will contribute to supporting the Sudan Incident Management Support Team (IMST) by engaging in various activities tailored to their interests and skills, including:

· <--[endif]-->Assisting the incident manager in setting-up and operationalizing the regional Incident Management support team.

<-- [if supportLists]-->·<--[endif]-->Supporting the incident manager to develop and maintain effective coordination mechanisms and collaborative relationships within the IMST and with the country-level Incident Management Team (IMT).

· <--[endif]-->Assisting the Incident Manager in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on operational work plans.

· <--[endif]-->Drafting essential documentation, presentations, and reports as requested by the Incident Manager.

· <--[endif]-->Attending meetings, capturing meeting minutes, documenting and sharing action points, and ensuring thorough follow-up on agreed-upon actions.

· <--[endif]-->Assisting in preparing summaries and briefs as required by the Incident Manager.

· <--[endif]-->Organizing and managing data and documents efficiently.

Additionally, the intern will be responsible for any other tasks delegated by the Incident Manager to further support the efficient functioning of the IMST.

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.

Within this internship, the intern will:

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

The internship duration will be 24 weeks.

Tentative start dates for three internship opportunities: June 1, 2024;

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies in health sciences or related field at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study in health sciences or related field at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Experience

  • Drafting technical reports and briefs.
  • Experience in emergency management through academic work or research.
  • Field and/or developing country experience.
  • Experience with analysis and graphical display of data, including health information would be an asset;

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of other UN language.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern.The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

  • Interns are not eligible to take up a consultant or other non-staff contract in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship. However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.
