Under the guidance of the Immunization Specialist the intern provides professional technical and operational assistance throughout the programming process for the routine immunization programme through the application of theoretical and technical skills in researching, collecting, analysing and presenting technical programme information while learning organizational rules, regulations and procedures to support the implementation of the Divisional Strategy and Work Plan.

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

Purpose of the internship:

The UNICEF Internship Programme offers eligible/qualified students at both Headquarters and country offices the opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff. This internship is for the purpose of acquiring organizational knowledge of rules, regulations and processes to supplement academic and theoretical knowledge.

Under the guidance of the Immunization Specialist the intern provides professional technical and operational assistance throughout the programming process for the routine immunization programme through the application of theoretical and technical skills in researching, collecting, analysing and presenting technical programme information while learning organizational rules, regulations and procedures to support the implementation of the Divisional Strategy and Work Plan.

This 3 months long (June through August 2017) internship will be office-based, at UNICEF Health Section, Programme Division in New York, with the intern providing 100% of the time to the assignment. The intern will be provided with office space and office access badge. A computer may be provided for use during the internship or intern may use his/her use own laptop.

Under the supervision of the Immunization Specialist the intern will:

• To assess the trends of disease outbreaks, preferably vaccine-preventable diseases, in urban areas and make linkages with the current trend of urbanization and growing population of urban poor.
• To assess trend of urban poor population (over ten years) and health outcomes in urban areas for specific countries with high rates of urbanization and high number of unvaccinated children.
• To support the process of developing an equity scorecard for immunization, using policy, strategy and plan documents from countries.

Duration: 3 months

Qualifications: 

• Currently enrolled in a graduate (Master’s) or higher degree in the area of Public Health;
• Completed at least two year of full-time studies of the undergraduate degree;
• Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records.
• Previous work experience in literature review, data collection and analysis is an asset
• Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese), or a local language, is an asset.
