OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Neglected Tropical Diseases Unit (NTD) is located within the Department of Communicable Diseases (DCD) at the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO).In close collaboration with WHO/HQ and the relevant WHO Country Offices, the NTD Unit works with EMR Member States, stakeholders and partners to implement the global WHO NTD Roadmap, with the objective of reducing the burden of disease within the EMR through prevention, control and elimination of NTDs.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will perform the following duties\:Lead the development and adaptation of manuals, guidelines, standard operating procedures, training material, advocacy material and other relevant publications in the area of NTDsProvide leadership and technical guidance to EMR Member States and all actors working in this area for the implementation of NTDs activities at country-level; ensuring compliance of interventions implemented at country level with WHO roadmaps, recommendations, norms and standards; Carry out and coordinate programmatic reviews of disease control interventions and develop appropriate policies and new approaches at the regional and country level.Promote progressive transfer and strengthening of technical competencies on NTDs within the EMR, through partnering with and relying on academic institutions, WHO Collaborating Centres and other centres of expertise and excellenceGuide the countries to develop the NTDs national plan, monitor their implementation and develop progress reports.Manage funds allocated to WHO in support of NTD activities; prepare proposals and other project documents. Initiate and negotiate funding agreements with government, non-government organizations and develop a resource mobilization strategy to support NTD activities in the region.Raise the profile of NTDs within national and international health agenda; link Member States with suitable partners; convey NTD stakeholders and coordinate their activities within the EMR; develop proposals for WHO in support of Member States.Provide insight on NTD technical areas requiring scientific investigation; facilitate, promote and support NTD research activities within the EMR.Provide technical expertise in collecting and analyzing data and information for the estimation of the burden and progress of NTDs in EMR Represent WHO/EMRO at national and international NTD events, technical meetings, workshops, and training courses; promote links and partnerships with donors, partners and other relevant actors

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: University degree in medicine and Master's degree in tropical diseases medicine
Desirable\: Training in prevention, control, and elimination of tropical diseases

Experience

Essential\: At least 10 years of experience combined at the national and the international levels in the field of neglected tropical diseases prevention, control and elimination
Desirable\: Working experience with WHO, other UN agencies or international organizations.

Skills

Demonstrated knowledge in prevention, control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases.Substantial knowledge in medical practice and public health. Excellent leadership interpersonal and presentation skills High sense of accountability and responsibility.Proven ability in managing resources and partnership

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 84,721 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1673 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
