UN Women Background:

Unit/ Project Background:

The Human Resource Section is responsible for the timely, accurate, equitable, effective and efficient delivery of all human resources management services, i.e., strategic staff planning, recruitment, staff administration, organizational and design and learning/career development, for the continuous development and improvement in human resource operations, policies, and methods to align with UN Women evolving business needs and for providing advisory support to the Executive Director in the formulation and implementation of UN Women's overall mission, strategy and plans of actions.

Under the guidance of the HR Learning Specialist, HR the Learning & Development Intern oversees the day-to-day activities for the Internship Community of UN Women. The Learning & Development section is responsible for supporting the onboarding of interns, their learning and career development plans, and their overall wellbeing by maintaining a productive and positive work environment in UN Women in which the interns feel comfortable and part of a global UN Women community in which they can work efficiently and effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Coordinator of Internship Learning & Development co-manages the UN Women network of interns from onboarding to exit. Specifically, the coordinator will:

 Manage orientation of new interns

  • Welcome Interns by sending intern-specific Welcome Letter, facilitating orientation delivered by the HR Learning team, and supporting new interns to help them become familiar with UN Women and the UN Common System.
  • Monitor integration into role and workplace by informally checking in with interns periodically.
  • Maintain intern orientation tracker to ensure accurate onboarding and oversight records.

Support Intern Workplace Engagement

  • Plan and organise social events and activities for interns, such as UN inter-agency events, Intern Appreciation Day and happy hours.
  • Maintain and update the “UN Women Intern” facebook group page, the internship programme intranet page, and any other social media to distribute news.

Monitor and Support the Development Needs of Interns

  • Check periodically on progress of internship of interns and managers and follow up on any requests for support.
  • Guide interns on how to access and use learning resources such as the online Learning Management System for courses related to role and organizational knowledge.
  • Work with HR Learning team to co-develop curriculum for learning events such as career development workshops and career panels to support interns’ learning and development.
  • Provide individual career development coaching support such as reviewing of resume or CV, and leading mock interviews to support interns’ job search strategies.
  • Schedule and conduct exit interviews to evaluate each intern’s experience at UN Women and analyze data to identify best practices and red flags.
  • Organise career development workshops and bag lunch sessions, identify internal or external speakers, initiate language conversation tables, and encourage interns to develop new skills and competencies.
  •  Provide guidance for intern work plans to the intern and hiring manager  

Support Knowledge Management and Partnerships Internally and Externally to UN Women

  •  Backup the HR recruitment intern to maintain incoming and outgoing intern database.
  •  Foster partnerships with other UN agencies and with University Internship Offices and co-host outreach events and career development panels.
  • Assist with identifying and upgrading logistical and operational needs by adopting or initiating special projects.

  • Develop trainer skills to deliver training and guidance in career development and performance management in an international environment.
  • Develop skills in implementing and monitoring quality assurance related to training programmes and their impact.

Required Skills and Experience


  • Academic background in education, learning, staff development, human resources, international development, or related field.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.


  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and an application.
