TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR INTERNSHIP

Organizational Unit: Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Unit and Child Protection (CP) Unit, Division of International Protection (DIP)
Duty station: Geneva
Duration of the internship: 2-6 months, potential extension to maximum 8 months. Full-time preferred
Expected start date: July/August 2018

Background information/Organizational Context:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. An unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from home. Among them are nearly 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18. Responding to the protection needs of children, and preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) against women, as well as children and men, are two of the core components of UNHCR's protection mandate

The SGBV unit and the Child Protection Unit of the UNHCR work closely together, providing operational support at a global level, developing guidelines, trainings and tools, and working with colleagues across the organization to implement prevention, mitigation and response mechanisms to protect persons of concern to the UNHCR.

This internship serves to support both units, divided 50% to support the Sexual and Gender-based Violence Unit and 50% to support the Child Protection Unit.

Objectives of internship:
- Gain practical work experience related to the protection of children and the prevention of and response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
- Support the daily work of the SGBV and child protection units.



Duties and Responsibilities

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence
- Support the preparation and implementation of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, and other events as needed
- Support colleagues in the preparation and delivering of workshops
- Conduct research on SGBV and prepare briefings and background documents as needed. The intern will be expected to help in particular with briefing notes on school-related sexual violence and on Female-Genital Mutilation.
- Manage and regularly update content for the SGBV intranet page
- Manage the SGBV mailbox and disseminate information to field colleagues
- Assist with the organization of meetings and events, and with note-taking and reporting.
- Undertaking of any other task as assigned by the Associate Protection Officer or Senior Advisers.

Child Protection
- Support internal communications on the launch of the Guidelines on Assessing and Determining the Best Interests of the Child (40%). This includes:
- Producing, editing and publishing a series of short videos and other innovative communications materials;
- Social media communications;
- Managing production, design and translation of key documents;
- Managing the child protection intranet page.
- Support for the Global Youth Advisory Council participation in the High Commissioner's Dialogue (10%). This includes:
-       Supporting Youth Delegates to prepare for their interventions and meetings during the Dialogue.
- Providing social and logistical support for Youth Delegates.
- Undertaking of any other task as assigned by the Protection Officer or Senior Advisers.

Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying)  or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
- Demonstrable interest in child protection, SGBV, and/or refugee protection.
- Competent user of standard word processing and spreadsheet software. Experience using online content management platforms is an asset.
- Proven experience of research and drafting of documents.
- Demonstrable competencies in media and communications
- Demonstrable competencies in administration, organization and time-management.
- Fluency in English and either French or Spanish is required, Arabic desirable.

Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
