Under the direct supervision of the Private Partnerships Specialist, the intern/volunteer will support the Office’s private partnerships work on different areas.

Cote d’Ivoire has +22 million inhabitants and more than 50% of population being under 19; it is a demographically young country, with impressive economic growth rates (7.9% in 2016) and promising potential for private investments and innovation. At the same time social challenges remain important with +45% of the population living in poverty and significant differences on all development indicators among urban and rural areas.

The 2017-2020 Cote d’Ivoire Country Program Document has identified private partnerships as one of the key 5 strategies to deliver the overall program results. The office’s approach in this area focuses on three dimensions:

• Engaging critical industries (cocoa, mining) to influence business’ practice and polices towards better respect of child rights and business principles
• Develop ad-hoc partnerships focusing on specific programmatic priorities
• Mobilize private financial resources (fundraising)

This stream of work is led by the Private Partnerships Specialist, working in close collaboration with UNCIEF Cote d’Ivoire colleagues (Section chiefs, Resource Mobilization Specialist, Innovation Specialist, and Senior Management), UNICEF Geneva and UNICEF WCAR.

How can you make a difference?

Under the direct supervision of the Private Partnerships Specialist, the intern/volunteer will support the Office’s private partnerships work on different areas, as an example:

• Assist the Private Partnerships Specialist with the work on children’s rights in global supply chains (cocoa and mining)
• Conduct research on private fundraising opportunities for the office targeting private foundations and high net worth individuals
• Support private sector engagement activities in the context of U-Report and youth engagement work – negotiate and establish agreements with national radios, media, mobile companies and other businesses
• Support a research on the labor pools and professional opportunities for youth in specific regions
• Support a research on the existing private demand and offer for water treatment services, and support the WASH section for the development of innovative mechanisms to work with private sector
• Support the design and implementation of an innovative approach to public-private partnerships focusing on social and environmental impact
• On a needs basis, provide support to the work of the Private Partnerships Specialist in the areas of private sector engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility, Innovative public-private partnerships, advocacy.

To qualify as a young champion for every child you will…

• Be enrolled in an advanced/undergraduate university degree (Master’s or higher) in business administration, economics, law, social or political science, or related field
• A relevant background in business, project management, marketing, communications, children’s and or human rights
• Fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is considered a very important asset.
• Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
