Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in\: improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; developing indigenous capabilities around the world for national energy planning; deploying new nuclear power plants; preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

The department has a dynamic, participative and interactive operating environment with inputs received from the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, and technical counterparts in Member States and the international development community.

The Division of Nuclear Power comprises the Nuclear Power Engineering Section, the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section, the Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section and the INPRO (International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles) Section. The Division provides core engineering, technological, human resource development and management support to interested Member States in the field of nuclear power.

The Nuclear Power Engineering Section (NPES) assists interested Member States in the development of the safe and effective operation of nuclear power plants and in the expansion of existing nuclear programmes. It provides guidance and encourages information exchange on engineering aspects of design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, decommissioning; management and management systems; human resource development and performance improvement; expansion planning and strategies; and stakeholder involvement.


Main Purpose

As a member of a team reporting to the Head of the Nuclear Power Engineering Section, and under the overall guidance of the Director of the Division of Nuclear Power, the Nuclear Engineer ensures a results-oriented programmatic response to Member States' priorities by organizing training programmes, workshops and technical meetings, and preparing state-of-the-art reports on engineering and operation of nuclear power plants.

Role

The Nuclear Engineer is\: (1) an expert in engineering and operation of nuclear power plants; (2) a technical officer, arranging and conducting activities required for the successful and timely publication of technical documents as an outcome of tasks in the relevant field under his/her responsibility and as defined in the IAEA programme; (3) a scientific secretary, planning and leading moderately complex Technical Meetings; (4) a relationship builder, establishing, developing and maintaining international partnerships and network in nuclear power plant engineering and operation with international organizations and other relevant stakeholders.


Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Coordinate, support, facilitate and implement the various meetings organized within the scope of engineering and operation of nuclear power plants.
  • Prepare technical reports and guidelines on engineering, and operation of nuclear power plants.
  • Plan and implement activities in the area of engineering, and operation of nuclear power plants in accordance with Member States' needs, including but not limited to operation of nuclear facilities, management support for operation leadership and engineering and compliance of Member States with the requirements and recommendations of the IAEA's guidance in these same areas.
  • Provide advice and technical assistance to Member States for specific projects in the field of engineering, and operation of nuclear power plants, as required, and contribute to preparation of the IAEA's programme, financial plan, annual reports, etc.
  • Convene consultancies, Technical Meetings, workshops and coordinated research projects resulting in the development of technical publications or deliver other tangible outputs to best serve the needs of interested Member States.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Master's Degree - Advanced university degree in nuclear engineering.

At least 7 years of working experience in engineering and operation of nuclear power plants.
Experience of working in a national/international nuclear organization or institute desirable.
Comprehensive experience in the coordination of international projects related to engineering, and operation of nuclear power plants.
In-depth knowledge of and experience in the scientific/technical principles and developments relating to the field of engineering, and operation, of nuclear power plants.
Experience in technical writing in English for producing and reviewing documents related to engineering, and operation, of nuclear power plants.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $72637 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 31888, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
