Organizational Setting

FAO’s approach to development assistance in Mindanao focuses on supporting the rehabilitation of agriculture and fisheries-based livelihoods, accelerating agriculture-based enterprises and increasing access to sustainable energy, and resilience to risk in municipalities affected by natural disasters and conflict. FAO interventions will include, among others\:

  1. Introduction of various productivity enhancing technologies to improve household incomes and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

  2. Technical assistance to government in reviewing existing policies that promote equitable agribusiness venture arrangements between farmers and agribusiness firms and capacity building activities for farmers that are anchored on the value chain approach.

  3. Capacity building on enterprise development and agribusiness that will allow farmers, fisherfolk and local government units to maximize potential market opportunities.

  4. Restoring and increasing the productivity of agriculture and fisheries-based livelihoods of smallholder farmers and marginalized fishers, decommissioned Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants and their families

    Enhancing the competitiveness of farm households, particularly women, to establish and manage microenterprises

  5. Facilitating the establishment of agribusiness enterprises with production-market contract agreements or similar arrangements

Reporting Lines

The consultant will work under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative ad interim, the direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative in the Philippines (Programme), the day to day guidance of the Socio-economic, Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change Adaptation, Environment and Natural Resources and Forestry Group Team Leader, and the technical guidance of the FAO Forestry Officer (Capacity Building and Outreach).

Technical Focus

The consultant will support the project to improve the awareness of forests and the benefits of their sustainable management among children in the Philippines by contributing to the development of three teaching modules for children aged 9-12. The education consultant will work closely with FAO, an education expert from Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald and national stakeholders to ensure the modules are relevant to the national context and will coordinate a pilot of the modules in two schools. The education consultant will also complete an assessment of forestry education in the Philippines for children aged 9-12 and conduct a baseline survey. The consultant will also contribute content to an implementation guidance publication, including lessons learned from the project.

Tasks and responsibilities

        1. Assist in the identification and engagement of key stakeholders to attend the inception meeting and the national stakeholder consultation and to provide feedback on learning materials;

  1. Contribute to the development of three interactive, forest-based learning modules for children aged 9-12 ensuring they are adapted to local contexts by taking human, environmental and financial capacities into account, working closely with FAO, the project’s education expert from Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald and national stakeholders;

  2. Coordinate a pilot of the modules in two national schools;

  3. Contribute content to an implementation guidance publication;

  4. Attend the inception meeting and the national stakeholder consultation and provide meeting reports;

  5. Any other tasks as required by the Forestry Officer (Capacity Building and Outreach).

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
  • University degree (Master Degree preferred) in in forestry, or other related courses;

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in classroom teaching;

  • Expertise in developing learning materials, ability to co-ordinate with internal and external partners, and the ability to work with a high level of independence;

  • Working knowledge (Level C) of English;

  • A National of Philippines.
