Introduction

The position is located in the Security Unit within the Department of Internal Services and Administration (INTSERV). INTSERV is part of the Management and Reform Portfolio and is responsible for the general management of: facilities, property and inventory; safety and security; printing, publishing and distribution; diplomatic privileges; travel and transport; use of public spaces; and general internal services. The purpose of the Security Unit is to provide, on a rotational shift basis, security services for the protection of staff and material property at ILO headquarters. 

 

The security guard will aim to provide, on a rotational shift basis, security services for the protection of staff and material property at the ILO. This is an entry-level grade requiring appropriate training and experience. The incumbent will work as a member of the Security Team and will receive instructions from his or her immediate supervisor. He or she will be expected to work according to established schedules, including at night, on weekends and on public holidays.

 

The incumbent will report to the official responsible for security at headquarters and the Head of Security, who will act as a second-level supervisor.
 

Specific Duties

1.    Check identity documents presented in exchange for a visitor’s badge in accordance with building and ground access control procedures.


2.    Greet ILO staff, delegates and visitors and provide them with information on such matters as the location of meeting rooms, and reply to telephone enquiries.


3.    Operate surveillance/electronic equipment. Carry out regular patrols to ensure the security of ILO headquarters premises.


4.    In the event of an incident, alert the Security Team and follow first-level emergency health, safety and security procedures. Participate in the suppression of fires and the delivery of first aid if an incident occurs.


5.    Participate in regular training drills focusing on ongoing security procedures and practices, building systems monitoring, and emergency response.


6.    Provide security services during ILO conferences.


7.    Complete required forms and routine and standardized reports and records.


8.    Perform other relevant duties as required.

 

Required qualifications

Education

The incumbent must have completed secondary school education or equivalent level of education.

Experience

Two years of work experience in the field of safety and security. Fire suppression and first-aid certificates are required.

Languages

Excellent command of French and a working knowledge of another official ILO language (English or Spanish).

Competencies

Familiarity with the security and equipment systems and procedures used within the ILO or other United Nations organizations would be an advantage. Ability to understand and follow instructions and work procedures. Observation skills. Cooperation, team spirit and orderliness. Good understanding of the work so that initiative can be shown in the performance of routine tasks. Ability to direct and guide co-workers. Courtesy and tact in dealing with others. Ability to reply in an appropriate manner to work-related enquiries. Ability to use IT tools for data entry and the production of simple reports. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non‑discriminatory behaviour.
