Department Description

The Labour Administration, Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Branch (LABADMIN/OSH) is responsible for developing and assisting in the implementation of the ILO’s objectives in these important areas through the provision of technical expertise and support on global, regional, and national levels. The Branch aims to create worldwide awareness of the human and economic costs of work-related fatalities, injuries, and diseases and to place the health and safety of all workers high on the international agenda. It notably oversees the production of reliable, evidence-based and pertinent OSH data that allows definition of priorities, monitoring of actions and assessment of interventions and programs at global, regional, sector and national levels.

The Branch collaborates with other ILO departments and WHO in developing specific methodologies to assess the relationship between occupational exposure to specific risk factors and their effects on workers’ health. It also develops advocacy, technical guidance material and information notes to help constituents design and implement robust systems for reporting and recording occupational injuries and illnesses, developing and using national OSH statistics to define strategic priorities, guide action and evaluate OSH interventions. Finally, it contributes to the development, analysis and validation of statistical studies carried out by the organization and external partners. Additional data on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on OSH is needed, in particular with regard to essential sectors. The incumbent of this internship will contribute establishing evidence-based assessment of relationship between exposure to occupational risks and health effects.

Learning Area

The intern will develop a good understanding of the functioning of the ILO, its unique mandate, values and current priorities. He/She will become familiar with the relevant international conventions, recommendations and codes of practices of direct relevance to OSH, as well as with updated knowledge on the development of global estimates on occupational injuries and diseases. The intern will also learn to interact with leading experts in addition to getting familiar with the latest thinking in this area of growing importance. He/She will also have the possibility of engaging with other ILO experts and learn from their respective specialization. Overall, the intern will develop a comprehensive understanding of the social and political sensibilities related to the production of global estimates in OSH.

The intern will work closely with the responsible ILO specialists as a member of the larger OSH team within the Branch. He/She will help define the primary data that can be used to produce OSH statistics, assess their quality and work towards their integration into reliable statistical models aimed at estimating the health effects of exposure for selected groups of workers. The specific duties of this internship will be the following:

-    Undertake a review of selected literature on relationship between exposure to occupational risks and development of health outcomes.
-    Participate to the assessment of the quality of the scientific articles and the proof of evidence on relationship between occupational exposure and health effects.
-    Prospect and assess the possible use of data sources to produce OSH indicators.
-    Contribute to the development of specific questionnaires and surveys to explore the impact of risk factors, working conditions and other determinants of health.
-    Conduct specific desk reviews on selected topics to explore the impact of COVID-19 on workers’ health.
-    Participate in the development of statistical models to produce estimations on impact of occupational exposure on health.
-    Undertake other tasks requested by the supervisor or Branch Chief in relation to epidemiology applied to OSH and the development of related statistics.

Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago. Areas of studies include occupational health or public health.
