These offices provide strong in-country support for the implementation of Young Africa Works. We collaborate with governments, the private sector, educators, and other funders to enhance the quality of education and vocational training, equip young individuals with the necessary skills for the workforce, expand access to financial services for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and facilitate connections between job seekers and meaningful employment opportunities.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Lead, Internal Communications, the Consultant will develop clear, professional, and well-written content that informs, engages, and inspires internal and external stakeholders. S/he will collaborate closely with a wide variety of stakeholders across the Foundation and externally to produce content that tells the story of the Foundation across multiple channels. S/he also will work with the Senior Director, Corporate Communications and Lead Brand and Content to create and publish content that meets the Foundation’s guidelines and standards.  

The successful candidate will be based in Canada or one of our offices in Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Rwanda, Nigeria, Uganda, or Ethiopia).

WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE 

  • Develop and implement a content strategy for each relevant publication aligned with target audience interests and organizational goals. Ability to conduct research across the enterprise to ascertain content needs and preferences. Must regularly assess the effectiveness of communication materials and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Write and edit compelling content for various publications, including newsletters, reports, press releases, website/intranet copy, and (enterprise) social media posts. Must be able to develop key messaging and talking points for various stakeholders and ensure consistency in messaging and tone across all communications materials.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to gather content and stories that are informative and inspiring for all publications.
  • Lead and oversee the entire publication production process, from concept development to distribution. Coordinate with interviewees, graphic designers, photographers/production crew to produce high-quality publications while adhering to brand guidelines. Must be able to manage timelines and deliver publications on budget.
  • Track and analyze communication metrics using provided analysis tools and prepare regular reports on communication activities and outcomes. Ability to use data insights to make informed decisions and continuously improve communication strategies.
  • Foster strong working relationships with various stakeholders across the enterprise.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, business, or a relevant field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in writing for traditional or digital agencies, in-house marketing, or communications teams.
  • Ability to master the Mastercard Foundation’s tone of voice and deliver content that makes complex concepts easy to understand.
  • Experience writing short and long-form content and creating accurate and engaging content.
  • Ability to generate big ideas and a creative approach to storytelling.
  • Experience in working with and interviewing subject matter experts and project managers.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in working with communications agencies, video production houses, etc., and ability to negotiate and manage vendor contracts.
  • Resourceful and able to work with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously and deliver quality work under deadline pressure.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional project management, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Hold an advanced degree in education, health, or a related field.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to execute a range of job duties and changing priorities.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to articulate information to a variety of constituents across cultures.
  • Possess professional maturity, sensitivity to different cultures, and impeccable integrity that exemplify the Foundation’s values.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Mastercard Foundation’s values and vision.
