Stipend: This is an AmeriCorps*VISTA position and therefore pays a stipend of about $12,400 annually; medical benefits available through AmeriCorps

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.The IRC in Wichita resettles approximately 300 newly-arrived refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The Kansas Refugee Economic Empowerment project aligns with the Economic Opportunity focus area of the Americorps*VISTA program.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Community Engagement Americorps*VISTA is responsible for creating, building and maintaining relationships with community partners (schools, religious organizations, community groups, businesses, etc.) that will help increase community resources available to IRC’s clients, consistent with the IRC strategic plan and mission. The Community Engagement VISTA will support the recruitment and mobilization of volunteers and manage the process for receiving and distributing in-kind donations. This role will assure that IRC is visible and credible within the community, providing education and information to promote refugee and immigrant issues and increase interest in IRC services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Identify, develop and maintain key relationships to promote IRC and its services with essential community entities, such as schools, coalitions, community-based organizations, religious groups and service providers.
  • Provide an active, reliable presence at community events and venues, providing accurate information for community members seeking volunteer or donation opportunities or in need of services.
  • Represent the IRC at various speaking engagements.
  • Support the recruitment and mobilization of volunteers to help assure the success of IRC’s outreach, education, and other volunteer activities. Facilitate orientations, supervise and communicate with volunteers.
  • Train staff working with volunteers and interns.
  • Manage process for in-kind donations, including receiving, sorting and distributing to clients as needed.
  • Maintain logs and issue monthly reports on volunteer and in-kind donation activities.
  • Coordinate with volunteers to track volunteer hours and assist with drafting reports to finance.
  • Plan and implement volunteer recognition activities.
  • When necessary, complete all case notes in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree, preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Previous experience with volunteer management strongly desired.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area
